Read Along With Miss Michelle

Miss Michelle, whom I call Crafty Gal, has a new video series called Read Along With Me, in which she reads children's picture books to you, the viewer. Want to watch the first couple of episodes?  I thought you would.

That is NOT a Good Idea!

How many times do you have a cute and exciting children's picture book?  Mo Willems has written one called That is NOT a Good Idea!

Book Trailer for
That is NOT a Good Idea!, by Mo Willems

The book cover suggests that the chicks are watching the story unfold as a silent movie.  This makes it more fun to read, because we all know watching a movie is make-believe, so nobody actually gets hurt in this tale.  Reading is like watching a movie because as the reader (or as someone in a movie audience), you feel like you know what's going on, even if the characters in the story don't seem to know about dangers that you can see clearly.  The famous film director Alfred Hitchcock called that the key to suspense (when the audience knows about the danger, but the movie characters are unaware).

Young readers and their caregivers will get caught up in the excitement of a thrilling adventure story that resembles the old silent movies' "damsels in distress," whom the hero rescues just in time, and the villain is captured and brought to justice.

P.S.  In writing That is NOT a Good Idea!, Mo Willems was influenced by "damsel in distress" silent movies, in which a villain places the lady in danger, only to be rescued at the last second by the hero.  In this silent movie clip, the damsel signals her faithful slobberdog who charges-in to save the day.  It would have been better if the hero had been a feline.  Just saying.

Our "Open Shut Them" Song

Crafty Gal (Miss Michelle) performs a singalong in Story Time that's a pretty catchy tune.  She has a new video series, Story Time Rocks!, which I know you'll want to watch.

Story Time Rocks!
Featuring Miss Michelle @ MPL
The "Open Shut Them" Song

Crafty Gal uses songs and motion to engage her early literacy patrons and their caregivers.  Preschool age children learn through repetition and coordinating activity with sound and visual cues.  The "Open Shut Them" song is quite popular with her young charges.

Go ahead and sing along!

Watch Crafty Gal's other videos uploaded to the MPL Early Literacy YouTube Channel.

Free popcorn!  I'm so there already!

Beside goodie bags for kids signing-up for summer reading, there will be lots of fun activities. We've got photos from last year's big bash showing what fun you'll have if you drop by this year.

Goodbye, Miss Miriam!

Yesterday was Miss Miriam's last day at the Library.  She worked here for over 13 years, which is a long time in kitty years.  Miss Miriam served as senior cataloger and reference librarian in the MPL youth services department.  She could do everything!  Still can, in fact.  Too bad she won't be here doing it.

We made a tribute trailer for her, which I'd like to share.

We will certainly miss her.  Good luck, Miss Miriam, in your new surroundings. Drop us a postcard sometime.  We like old-fashioned mail.

Take the Virtual Walking Tour

On Friday, May 3, 2013, North Madison Elementary School third graders took the Library's walking tour of historic downtown Mooresville, Indiana.

You, too, can take the walking tour. Visit the MPL Indiana Room and check-out our self-guided walking tour audio guide CD using your Evergreen Indiana library card, or you could watch our virtual walking tour below:

Our Gneighborhood Gnomes

Crafty Gal (Miss Michelle) has created a superb display in which Morris the Gnome reads to hedgehogs (although the little one looks like a mole to moi). It's quite the fabulous story time. Wait--it's more like a fableous, folklorish story time. (Those are not real words, but they oughtta be.)

Check out the details in Crafty Gal's latest early literacy blog post.  We'll borrow her photos (as always, click images to enlarge).

P.S.  "Teeny Tiny Gnome" (1966) was intended as comic relief on the second Monkees album, but Don Kirshner, who had been hired to supervise the group's music, nixed the tune in favor of other fare from his stable of songwriters.  "Teeny Tiny Gnome" finally appeared on the compilation album The Monkees Missing Links (volume one) (1987).
